    Laura Ingalls Wilder

Hardcover (Library of America, Aug. 30, 2012)
Originally published from 1932 to 1943, Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House books are classics of children’s literature, beloved by millions. But readers who last enjoyed them as children may be astonished at the quiet poetry of Wilder’s prose and the force and poignancy of her portrait of the lives of American pioneers. Now The Library of America and editor Caroline Fraser present a definitive boxed set that affirms Wilder’s place in the American canon, reintroducing these enduring works to readers young and old. Here, for the first time in two collectible hardcover volumes, are all eight Little House novels—brilliant narratives of the early life of Laura Ingalls and her family as they grow up with the country in the woods, on the plains, and finally in the small towns of the advancing American frontier—plus the posthumous novella The First Four Years, which recounts the early years of the author’s marriage to Almanzo Wilder. As a special feature, four rare autobiographical pieces address the need for historical accuracy in children’s literature, reveal real life events not included in the novels, and answer the inevitable question: what happened next?Contains:VOLUME ONELittle House in the Big WoodsFarmer Boy Little House on the Prairie On the Banks of Plum CreekLibrary of America volume #229VOLUME TWO By the Shores of Silver LakeThe Long Winter Little Town on the PrairieThese Happy Golden Years The First Four YearsLibrary of America volume #230Each volume features deluxe three-part bindings, a newly-researched chronology of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s life and career, and helpful notes. • The Little House Books

    Laura Ingalls Wilder, Garth Williams

    Paperback (HarperCollins, May 30, 1994)
The set includes: Little House in the Big Woods, Little House on the Prairie, On the Banks of Plum Creek, By the Shores of Silver Lake, and The Long Winter. Little House in the Big WoodsWolves and panthers and bears roam the deep Wisconsin woods in the late 1870's. In those same woods, Laura lives with Pa and Ma, and her sisters, Mary and Baby Carrie, in a snug little house built of logs. Pa hunts and traps. Ma makes her own cheese and butter. All night long, the wind howls lonesomely, but Pa plays the fiddle and sings, keeping the family safe and cozy.Little House on the PrairiePa Ingalls decides to sell the little log house, and the family sets out for Indian country! They travel from Wisconsin to Kansas, and there, finally, Pa builds their little house on the prairie. Sometimes farm life is difficult, even dangerous, but Laura and her family are kept busy and are happy with the promise of their new life on the prairie. On the Banks of Plum CreekLaura's family's first home in Minnesota is made of sod, but Pa builds a clean new house made of sawed lumber beside Plum Creek. The money for materials will come from their first wheat crop. Then, just before the wheat is ready to harvest, a strange glittering cloud fills the sky, blocking out the sun. Soon millions of grasshoppers cover the field and everything on the farm. In a week's time, there is no wheat crop left at all.By the Shores of Silver LakePa Ingalls heads west to the unsettled wilderness of the Dakota Territory. When Ma, Mary, Laura, Carrie, and baby Grace join him, they become the first settlers in the town of De Smet. And Pa begins work on the first building in what will soon be a brand-new town on the shores of Silver Lake. The Long WinterThe first terrible storm comes to the barren prairie in October. Then it snows almost without stopping until April. Snow has reached the rooftops, and no trains can get through with food or coal. The people of De Smet are starving, including Laura's family, who wonder how they're going to make it through this terrible winter. It is young Almanzo Wilder who finally understands what needs to be done. He must save the town, even if it means risking his own life.

  • The Little House Books

    Laura Ingalls Wilder, Garth Williams

Paperback (Harper Trophy, March 15, 1971)
First Harper Trophy Editions, by Laura Ingalls Wilder. All nine softcovers appear to be unread and 7 of them are very good with very little wear or rubbing, flat, tight and clean inside, but with yellowing inside covers and pages. The First Four Years has a 1 circled on the top of the front cover. More seriously, two of the volumes are in bad shape, with one barely acceptable and one just good, OK reading copies but not collectible. Farmer Boy has the cover coming loose and there is lots of tape reinforcement at the spine, also with a chunk out of the top right corner of the front cover. By the Shores of Silver Lake has the front cover torn through in the middle and most of the bottom 1/4 the back cover is torn off. Note also that The First Four Years has a 1972 publication date while all the others have 1971.
